Ye are requited naught save what ye did -

On couches facing one another;
Yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bikaʾsin min maʿīn
A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,

Kaʾannahunna bayḍun maknūn
(Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).

Fāṭṭalaʿa faraʾāhu fī sawāʾi al-jaḥīm
Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.

Walawlā niʿmatu rabbī lakuntu mina al-muḥḍarīn
And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).
Afamā naḥnu bimayyitīn
Are we then not to die
Illā mawtatanā al-ulā wamā naḥnu bimuʿadhdhabīn
Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?
Inna hādhā lahuwa al-fawzu al-ʿaẓīm
Lo! this is the supreme triumph.
Limithli hādhā falyaʿmali al-ʿāmilūn
For the like of this, then, let the workers work.
Adhālika khayrun nuzulan am shajaratu az-zaqqūm
Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?

Innā jaʿalnāhā fitnatan lilẓẓālimīn

Ṭalʿuhā kaʾannahu ruʾūsu ash-shayāṭīn
Its crop is as it were the heads of devils
Faʾinnahum laʾākilūna minhā famāliʾūna minhā al-buṭūn

Thumma inna lahum ʿalayhā lashawban min ḥamīm
And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water
Thumma inna marjiʿahum laʾilā al-jaḥīm

Fahum ʿalā āthārihim yuhraʿūn

Walaqad ḍalla qablahum aktharu al-awwalīn
And verily most of the men of old went astray before them,
Walaqad arsalnā fīhim mundhirīn
And verily We sent among them warners.
Fānẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu al-mundharīn
Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,
Illā ʿibāda Allāhi al-mukhlaṣīn
Save single-minded slaves of Allah.

Wanajjaynāhu waʾahlahu mina al-karbi al-ʿaẓīm

Wajaʿalnā dhurriyyatahu humu al-bāqīn
And made his seed the survivors,
Wataraknā ʿalayhi fī al-ākhirīn
And left for him among the later folk (the salutation):

Salāmun ʿalā nūḥin fī al-ʿālamīn
Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!

Innā kadhālika najzī al-muḥsinīn
Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Innahu min ʿibādinā al-muʾminīn
Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
Thumma aghraqnā al-ākharīn
Then We did drown the others.
Waʾinna min shīʿatihi laʾibrāhīm
And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham
Idh jāʾa rabbahu biqalbin salīm
When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;
Idh qāla liʾabīhi waqawmihi mādhā taʿbudūn

Aʾifkan ālihatan dūna Allāhi turīdūn
Is it a falsehood - gods beside Allah - that ye desire?
Famā ẓannukum birabbi al-ʿālamīn
What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?
Fanaẓara naẓratan fī an-nujūm
And he glanced a glance at the stars

Then said: Lo! I feel sick!
Fatawallaw ʿanhu mudbirīn
And they turned their backs and went away from him.
Farāgha ilā ālihatihim faqāla alā taʾkulūn
Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat?
Mā lakum lā tanṭiqūn
What aileth you that ye speak not?
Farāgha ʿalayhim ḍarban bil-yamīn
Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.
Faʾaqbalū ilayhi yaziffūn
And (his people) came toward him, hastening.

When Allah hath created you and what ye make?

Qālū ubnū lahu bunyānan faʾalqūhu fī al-jaḥīm
They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.

Waqāla innī dhāhibun ilā rabbī sayahdīn
And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.

My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.
Fabashsharnāhu bighulāmin ḥalīm
So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.

And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
Falammā aslamā watallahu liljabīn
Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,
Wanādaynāhu an yā ibrāhīm
We called unto him: O Abraham!
Qad ṣaddaqta ar-ruʾyā innā kadhālika najzī al-muḥsinīn
Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Inna hādhā lahuwa al-balāʾu al-mubīn
Lo! that verily was a clear test.
Wafadaynāhu bidhibḥin ʿaẓīm
Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
Wataraknā ʿalayhi fī al-ākhirīn
And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
Salāmun ʿalā ibrāhīm
Peace be unto Abraham!
Kadhālika najzī al-muḥsinīn
Thus do We reward the good.
Innahu min ʿibādinā al-muʾminīn
Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
Wabashsharnāhu biʾisḥāqa nabiyyan mina aṣ-ṣāliḥīn
And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.
Wabāraknā ʿalayhi waʿalā isḥāqa wamin dhurriyyatihimā muḥsinun waẓālimun linafsihi mubīn
And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.
Walaqad manannā ʿalā mūsā wahārūn
And We verily gave grace unto Moses and Aaron,
Wanajjaynāhumā waqawmahumā mina al-karbi al-ʿaẓīm
And saved them and their people from the great distress,
Wanaṣarnāhum fakānū humu al-ghālibīn
And helped them so that they became the victors.
Waʾātaynāhumā al-kitāba al-mustabīn
And We gave them the clear Scripture
Wahadaynāhumā aṣ-ṣirāṭa al-mustaqīm
And showed them the right path.
Wataraknā ʿalayhimā fī al-ākhirīn
And We left for them among the later folk (the salutation):
Salāmun ʿalā mūsā wahārūn
Peace be unto Moses and Aaron!
Innā kadhālika najzī al-muḥsinīn
Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Innahumā min ʿibādinā al-muʾminīn
Lo! they are two of Our believing slaves.
Waʾinna ilyāsa lamina al-mursalīn
And lo! Elias was of those sent (to warn),
Idh qāla liqawmihi alā tattaqūn
When he said unto his folk: Will ye not ward off (evil)?
Atadʿūna baʿlan watadharūna aḥsana al-khāliqīn
Will ye cry unto Baal and forsake the Best of creators,
Allāha rabbakum warabba ābāʾikumu al-awwalīn
Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?
Fakadhdhabūhu faʾinnahum lamuḥḍarūn
But they denied him, so they surely will be haled forth (to the doom)
Illā ʿibāda Allāhi al-mukhlaṣīn
Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
Wataraknā ʿalayhi fī al-ākhirīn
And we left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
Salāmun ʿalā il yāsīn
Peace be unto Elias!
Innā kadhālika najzī al-muḥsinīn
Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Innahu min ʿibādinā al-muʾminīn
Lo! he is one of our believing slaves.
Waʾinna lūṭan lamina al-mursalīn
And lo! Lot verily was of those sent (to warn).
Idh najjaynāhu waʾahlahu ajmaʿīn
When We saved him and his household, every one,
Illā ʿajūzan fī al-ghābirīn
Save an old woman among those who stayed behind;
Thumma dammarnā al-ākharīn
Then We destroyed the others.
Waʾinnakum latamurrūna ʿalayhim muṣbiḥīn
And lo! ye verily pass by (the ruin of) them in the morning
Wabillayli afalā taʿqilūn
And at night-time; have ye then no sense?
Waʾinna yūnusa lamina al-mursalīn
And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn)
Idh abaqa ilā al-fulki al-mashḥūn
When he fled unto the laden ship,
Fasāhama fakāna mina al-mudḥaḍīn
And then drew lots and was of those rejected;
Fal-taqamahu al-ḥūtu wahuwa mulīm
And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;
Falawlā annahu kāna mina al-musabbiḥīn
And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)
Lalabitha fī baṭnihi ilā yawmi yubʿathūn
He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;
Fanabadhnāhu bil-ʿarāʾi wahuwa saqīm
Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;
Waʾanbatnā ʿalayhi shajaratan min yaqṭīn
And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him;
Waʾarsalnāhu ilā miʾati alfin aw yazīdūn
And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more
Faʾāmanū famattaʿnāhum ilā ḥīn
And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while.
Fāstaftihim alirabbika al-banātu walahumu al-banūn
Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons?
Am khalaqnā al-malāʾikata ināthan wahum shāhidūn
Or created We the angels females while they were present?
Alā innahum min ifkihim layaqūlūn
Lo! it is of their falsehood that they say:
Walada Allāhu waʾinnahum lakādhibūn
Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie.
Aṣṭafā al-banāti ʿalā al-banīn
(And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons.
Mā lakum kayfa taḥkumūn
What aileth you? How judge ye?
Afalā tadhakkarūn
Will ye not then reflect?
Am lakum sulṭānun mubīn
Or have ye a clear warrant?
Faʾtū bikitābikum in kuntum ṣādiqīn
Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful.
Wajaʿalū baynahu wabayna al-jinnati nasaban walaqad ʿalimati al-jinnatu innahum lamuḥḍarūn
And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him).
Subḥāna Allāhi ʿammā yaṣifūn
Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him),
Illā ʿibāda Allāhi al-mukhlaṣīn
Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
Faʾinnakum wamā taʿbudūn
Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship,
Mā antum ʿalayhi bifātinīn
Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him.
Illā man huwa ṣāli al-jaḥīm
Save him who is to burn in hell.
Wamā minnā illā lahu maqāmun maʿlūm
There is not one of us but hath his known position.
Waʾinnā lanaḥnu aṣ-ṣāffūn
Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks,
Waʾinnā lanaḥnu al-musabbiḥūn
Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise
Waʾin kānū layaqūlūn
And indeed they used to say:
Law anna ʿindanā dhikran mina al-awwalīn
If we had but a reminder from the men of old
Lakunnā ʿibāda Allāhi al-mukhlaṣīn
We would be single-minded slaves of Allah.
Fakafarū bihi fasawfa yaʿlamūn
Yet (now that it is come) they disbelieve therein; but they will come to know.
Walaqad sabaqat kalimatunā liʿibādinā al-mursalīn
And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn)
Innahum lahumu al-manṣūrūn
That they verily would be helped,
Waʾinna jundanā lahumu al-ghālibūn
And that Our host, they verily would be the victors.
Fatawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīn
So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) awhile,
Waʾabṣirhum fasawfa yubṣirūn
And watch, for they will (soon) see.
Afabiʿadhābinā yastaʿjilūn
Would they hasten on Our doom?
Faʾidhā nazala bisāḥatihim fasāʾa ṣabāḥu al-mundharīn
But when it cometh home to them, then it will be a hapless morn for those who have been warned.
Watawalla ʿanhum ḥattā ḥīn
Withdraw from them awhile
Waʾabṣir fasawfa yubṣirūn
And watch, for they will (soon) see.
Subḥāna rabbika rabbi al-ʿizzati ʿammā yaṣifūn
Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)
Wasalāmun ʿalā al-mursalīn
And peace be unto those sent (to warn).
Wal-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi al-ʿālamīn
And praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!
