Ḥā-Mīm
Ha. Mim.
Wal-kitābi al-mubīn
By the Scripture that maketh plain
Innā anzalnāhu fī laylatin mubārakatin innā kunnā mundhirīn
Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning -
Fīhā yufraqu kullu amrin ḥakīm
Whereon every wise command is made clear
Amran min ʿindinā innā kunnā mursilīn
As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending -
Raḥmatan min rabbika innahu huwa as-samīʿu al-ʿalīm
A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower,
Rabbi as-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīn
Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure.
Lā ilāha illā huwa yuḥyī wayumītu rabbukum warabbu ābāʾikumu al-awwalīn
There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers.
Bal hum fī shakkin yalʿabūn
Nay, but they play in doubt.
Fārtaqib yawma taʾtī as-samāʾu bidukhānin mubīn
But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke
Yaghshā an-nāsa hādhā ʿadhābun alīm
That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment.
Rabbanā ikshif ʿannā al-ʿadhāba innā muʾminūn
(Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers.
Annā lahumu adh-dhikrā waqad jāʾahum rasūlun mubīn
How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them,
Thumma tawallaw ʿanhu waqālū muʿallamun majnūn
And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman?
Innā kāshifū al-ʿadhābi qalīlan innakum ʿāʾidūn
Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief).
Yawma nabṭishu al-baṭshata al-kubrā innā muntaqimūn
On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish.
Walaqad fatannā qablahum qawma firʿawna wajāʾahum rasūlun karīm
And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger,
An addū ilayya ʿibāda Allāhi innī lakum rasūlun amīn
Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you.
Waʾan lā taʿlū ʿalā Allāhi innī ātīkum bisulṭānin mubīn
And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant.
Waʾinnī ʿudhtu birabbī warabbikum an tarjumūn
And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death.
Waʾin lam tuʾminū lī fāʿtazilūn
And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go.
Fadaʿā rabbahu anna hāʾulāʾi qawmun mujrimūn
And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk.
Faʾasri biʿibādī laylan innakum muttabaʿūn
Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed,
Wātruki al-baḥra rahwan innahum jundun mughraqūn
And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host.
Kam tarakū min jannātin waʿuyūn
How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind,
Wazurūʿin wamaqāmin karīm
And the cornlands and the goodly sites
Wanaʿmatin kānū fīhā fākihīn
And pleasant things wherein they took delight!
Kadhālika waʾawrathnāhā qawman ākharīn
Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk;
Famā bakat ʿalayhimu as-samāʾu wal-arḍu wamā kānū munẓarīn
And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
Walaqad najjaynā banī isrāʾīla mina al-ʿadhābi al-muhīn
And We delivered the Children of Israel from the shameful doom;
Min firʿawna innahu kāna ʿāliyan mina al-musrifīn
(We delivered them) from Pharaoh. Lo! he was a tyrant of the wanton ones.
Walaqadi ikhtarnāhum ʿalā ʿilmin ʿalā al-ʿālamīn
And We chose them, purposely, above (all) creatures.
Waʾātaynāhum mina al-āyāti mā fīhi balāʾun mubīn
And We gave them portents wherein was a clear trial.
Inna hāʾulāʾi layaqūlūn
Lo! these, forsooth, are saying:
In hiya illā mawtatunā al-ulā wamā naḥnu bimunsharīn
There is naught but our first death, and we shall not be raised again.
Faʾtū biʾābāʾinā in kuntum ṣādiqīn
Bring back our fathers, if ye speak the truth!
Ahum khayrun am qawmu tubbaʿin walladhīna min qablihim ahlaknāhum innahum kānū mujrimīn
Are they better, or the folk of Tubb'a and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty.
Wamā khalaqnā as-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā lāʿibīn
And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in play.
Mā khalaqnāhumā illā bil-ḥaqqi walākinna aktharahum lā yaʿlamūn
We created them not save with truth; but most of them know not.
Inna yawma al-faṣli mīqātuhum ajmaʿīn
Assuredly the Day of Decision is the term for all of them,
Yawma lā yughnī mawlan ʿan mawlan shayʾan walā hum yunṣarūn
A day when friend can in naught avail friend, nor can they be helped,
Illā man raḥima Allāhu innahu huwa al-ʿazīzu ar-raḥīm
Save him on whom Allah hath mercy. Lo! He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
Inna shajarata az-zaqqūm
Lo! the tree of Zaqqum,
Ṭaʿāmu al-athīm
The food of the sinner!
Kal-muhli yaghlī fī al-buṭūn
Like molten brass, it seetheth in their bellies
Kaghalyi al-ḥamīm
As the seething of boiling water.
Khudhūhu fāʿtilūhu ilā sawāʾi al-jaḥīm
(And it will be said): Take him and drag him to the midst of hell,
Thumma ṣubbū fawqa raʾsihi min ʿadhābi al-ḥamīm
Then pour upon his head the torment of boiling water.
Dhuq innaka anta al-ʿazīzu al-karīm
(Saying): Taste! Lo! thou wast forsooth the mighty, the noble!
Inna hādhā mā kuntum bihi tamtarūn
Lo! this is that whereof ye used to doubt.
Inna al-muttaqīna fī maqāmin amīn
Lo! those who kept their duty will be in a place secured.
Fī jannātin waʿuyūn
Amid gardens and watersprings,
Yalbasūna min sundusin waʾistabraqin mutaqābilīn
Attired in silk and silk embroidery, facing one another.
Kadhālika wazawwajnāhum biḥūrin ʿīn
Even so (it will be). And We shall wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.
Yadʿūna fīhā bikulli fākihatin āminīn
They call therein for every fruit in safety.
Lā yadhūqūna fīhā al-mawta illā al-mawtata al-ulā wawaqāhum ʿadhāba al-jaḥīm
They taste not death therein, save the first death. And He hath saved them from the doom of hell,
Faḍlan min rabbika dhālika huwa al-fawzu al-ʿaẓīm
A bounty from thy Lord. That is the supreme triumph.
Faʾinnamā yassarnāhu bilisānika laʿallahum yatadhakkarūn
And We have made (this Scripture) easy in thy language only that they may heed.
Fārtaqib innahum murtaqibūn
Wait then (O Muhammad). Lo! they (too) are waiting.
