Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Idhā waqaʿati al-wāqiʿah
When the event befalleth -
Laysa liwaqʿatihā kādhibah
There is no denying that it will befall -
Khāfiḍatun rāfiʿah
Abasing (some), exalting (others);
Idhā rujjati al-arḍu rajjā
When the earth is shaken with a shock
Wabussati al-jibālu bassā
And the hills are ground to powder
Fakānat habāʾan munbaththā
So that they become a scattered dust,
Wakuntum azwājan thalāthah
And ye will be three kinds:
Faʾaṣḥābu al-maymanati mā aṣḥābu al-maymanah
(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Waʾaṣḥābu al-mashʾamati mā aṣḥābu al-mashʾamah
And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?
Was-sābiqūna as-sābiqūn
And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:
Ulāʾika al-muqarrabūn
Those are they who will be brought nigh
Fī jannāti an-naʿīm
In gardens of delight;
Thullatun mina al-awwalīn
A multitude of those of old
Waqalīlun mina al-ākhirīn
And a few of those of later time.
ʿalā sururin mawḍūnah
On lined couches,
Muttakiʾīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīn
Reclining therein face to face.
Yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wildānun mukhalladūn
There wait on them immortal youths
Biʾakwābin waʾabārīqa wakaʾsin min maʿīn
With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring
Lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā walā yunzifūn
Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,
Wafākihatin mimmā yatakhayyarūn
And fruit that they prefer
Walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūn
And flesh of fowls that they desire.
Waḥūrun ʿīn
And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,
Kaʾamthāli alluʾluʾi al-maknūn
Like unto hidden pearls,
Jazāʾan bimā kānū yaʿmalūn
Reward for what they used to do.
Lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan walā taʾthīmā
There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination
Illā qīlan salāman salāmā
(Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.
Waʾaṣḥābu al-yamīni mā aṣḥābu al-yamīn
And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Fī sidrin makhḍūd
Among thornless lote-trees
Waṭalḥin manḍūd
And clustered plantains,
Waẓillin mamdūd
And spreading shade,
Wamāʾin maskūb
And water gushing,
Wafākihatin kathīrah
And fruit in plenty
Lā maqṭūʿatin walā mamnūʿah
Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden,
Wafurushin marfūʿah
And raised couches;
Innā anshaʾnāhunna inshāʾā
Lo! We have created them a (new) creation
Fajaʿalnāhunna abkārā
And made them virgins,
ʿuruban atrābā
Lovers, friends,
Liʾaṣḥābi al-yamīn
For those on the right hand;
Thullatun mina al-awwalīn
A multitude of those of old
Wathullatun mina al-ākhirīn
And a multitude of those of later time.
Waʾaṣḥābu ash-shimāli mā aṣḥābu ash-shimāl
And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?
Fī samūmin waḥamīm
In scorching wind and scalding water
Waẓillin min yaḥmūm
And shadow of black smoke,
Lā bāridin walā karīm
Neither cool nor refreshing.
Innahum kānū qabla dhālika mutrafīn
Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury
Wakānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā al-ḥinthi al-ʿaẓīm
And used to persist in the awful sin.
Wakānū yaqūlūna aʾidhā mitnā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman aʾinnā lamabʿūthūn
And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,
Awaʾābāʾunā al-awwalūn
And also our forefathers?
Qul inna al-awwalīna wal-ākhirīn
Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time
Lamajmūʿūna ilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūm
Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.
Thumma innakum ayyuhā aḍ-ḍāllūna al-mukadhdhibūn
Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,
Laʾākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūm
Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum
Famāliʾūna minhā al-buṭūn
And will fill your bellies therewith;
Fashāribūna ʿalayhi mina al-ḥamīm
And thereon ye will drink of boiling water,
Fashāribūna shurba al-hīm
Drinking even as the camel drinketh.
Hādhā nuzuluhum yawma ad-dīn
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
Naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūn
We created you. Will ye then admit the truth?
Afaraʾaytum mā tumnūn
Have ye seen that which ye emit?
Aʾantum takhluqūnahu am naḥnu al-khāliqūn
Do ye create it or are We the Creator?
Naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu al-mawta wamā naḥnu bimasbūqīn
We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,
ʿalā an nubaddila amthālakum wanunshiʾakum fī mā lā taʿlamūn
That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.
Walaqad ʿalimtumu an-nashʾata al-ulā falawlā tadhakkarūn
And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?
Afaraʾaytum mā taḥruthūn
Have ye seen that which ye cultivate?
Aʾantum tazraʿūnahu am naḥnu az-zāriʿūn
Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?
Law nashāʾu lajaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūn
If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:
Innā lamughramūn
Lo! we are laden with debt!
Bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn
Nay, but we are deprived!
Afaraʾaytumu al-māʾa alladhī tashrabūn
Have ye observed the water which ye drink?
Aʾantum anzaltumūhu mina al-muzni am naḥnu al-munzilūn
Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?
Law nashāʾu jaʿalnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūn
If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?
Afaraʾaytumu an-nāra allatī tūrūn
Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out;
Aʾantum anshaʾtum shajaratahā am naḥnu al-munshiʾūn
Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?
Naḥnu jaʿalnāhā tadhkiratan wamatāʿan lilmuqwīn
We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.
Fasabbiḥ bismi rabbika al-ʿaẓīm
Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Falā uqsimu bimawāqiʿi an-nujūm
Nay, I swear by the places of the stars -
Waʾinnahu laqasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīm
And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -
Innahu laqurʾānun karīm
That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an
Fī kitābin maknūn
In a Book kept hidden
Lā yamassuhu illā al-muṭahharūn
Which none toucheth save the purified,
Tanzīlun min rabbi al-ʿālamīn
A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
Afabihādhā al-ḥadīthi antum mudhinūn
Is it this Statement that ye scorn,
Watajʿalūna rizqakum annakum tukadhdhibūn
And make denial thereof your livelihood?
Falawlā idhā balaghati al-ḥulqūm
Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
Waʾantum ḥīnaʾidhin tanẓurūn
And ye are at that moment looking
Wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tubṣirūn
- And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -
Falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīn
Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),
Tarjiʿūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīn
Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?
Faʾammā in kāna mina al-muqarrabīn
Thus if he is of those brought nigh,
Farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu naʿīm
Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.
Waʾammā in kāna min aṣḥābi al-yamīn
And if he is of those on the right hand,
Fasalāmun laka min aṣḥābi al-yamīn
Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.
Waʾammā in kāna mina al-mukadhdhibīna aḍ-ḍāllīn
But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,
Fanuzulun min ḥamīm
Then the welcome will be boiling water
Wataṣliyatu jaḥīm
And roasting at hell-fire.
Inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqu al-yaqīn
Lo! this is certain truth.
Fasabbiḥ bismi rabbika al-ʿaẓīm
Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
