Wan-najmi idhā hawā
By the Star when it setteth,
Mā ḍalla ṣāḥibukum wamā ghawā
Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived;

Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire.

It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired,

Which one of mighty powers hath taught him,

One vigorous; and he grew clear to view

Then he drew nigh and came down
Fakāna qāba qawsayni aw adnā
Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer,
Faʾawḥā ilā ʿabdihi mā awḥā
And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed.
Mā kadhaba al-fuʾādu mā raʾā
The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw.
Afatumārūnahu ʿalā mā yarā
Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth?
Walaqad raʾāhu nazlatan ukhrā
And verily he saw him yet another time
ʿinda sidrati al-muntahā
By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary,
ʿindahā jannatu al-maʾwā
Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode.
Idh yaghshā as-sidrata mā yaghshā
When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree,
Mā zāgha al-baṣaru wamā ṭaghā
The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold.
Laqad raʾā min āyāti rabbihi al-kubrā
Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord.
Afaraʾaytumu allāta wal-ʿuzzā
Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza
Wamanāta ath-thālithata al-ukhrā
And Manat, the third, the other?
Alakumu adh-dhakaru walahu al-unthā
Are yours the males and His the females?
Tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā
That indeed were an unfair division!
In hiya illā asmāʾun sammaytumūhā antum waʾābāʾukum mā anzala Allāhu bihā min sulṭānin in yattabiʿūna illā aẓ-ẓanna wamā tahwā al-anfusu walaqad jāʾahum min rabbihimu al-hudā
They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them.
Am lilʾinsāni mā tamannā
Or shall man have what he coveteth?
Falillāhi al-ākhiratu wal-ulā
But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former.
Wakam min malakin fī as-samāwāti lā tughnī shafāʿatuhum shayʾan illā min baʿdi an yaʾdhana Allāhu liman yashāʾu wayarḍā
And how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession availeth naught save after Allah giveth leave to whom He chooseth and accepteth.
Inna alladhīna lā yuʾminūna bil-ākhirati layusammūna al-malāʾikata tasmiyata al-unthā
Lo! it is those who disbelieve in the Hereafter who name the angels with the names of females.
Wamā lahum bihi min ʿilmin in yattabiʿūna illā aẓ-ẓanna waʾinna aẓ-ẓanna lā yughnī mina al-ḥaqqi shayʾā
And they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth.
Faʾaʿriḍ ʿan man tawallā ʿan dhikrinā walam yurid illā al-ḥayāta ad-dunyā
Then withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who fleeth from Our remembrance and desireth but the life of the world.
Dhālika mablaghuhum mina al-ʿilmi inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bimani ihtadā
Such is their sum of knowledge. Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth, and He is Best Aware of him whom goeth right.
Walillāhi mā fī as-samāwāti wamā fī al-arḍi liyajziya alladhīna asāʾū bimā ʿamilū wayajziya alladhīna aḥsanū bil-ḥusnā
And unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good with goodness.
Alladhīna yajtanibūna kabāʾira al-ithmi wal-fawāḥisha illā allamama inna rabbaka wāsiʿu al-maghfirati huwa aʿlamu bikum idh anshaʾakum mina al-arḍi waʾidh antum ajinnatun fī buṭūni ummahātikum falā tuzakkū anfusakum huwa aʿlamu bimani ittaqā
Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wardeth off (evil).
Afaraʾayta alladhī tawallā
Didst thou (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away,
Waʾaʿṭā qalīlan waʾakdā
And gave a little, then was grudging?
Aʿindahu ʿilmu al-ghaybi fahuwa yarā
Hath he knowledge of the Unseen so that he seeth?
Am lam yunabbaʾ bimā fī ṣuḥufi mūsā
Or hath he not had news of what is in the books of Moses
Waʾibrāhīma alladhī waffā
And Abraham who paid his debt:
Allā taziru wāziratun wizra ukhrā
That no laden one shall bear another's load,
Waʾan laysa lilʾinsāni illā mā saʿā
And that man hath only that for which he maketh effort,
Waʾanna saʿyahu sawfa yurā
And that his effort will be seen.
Thumma yujzāhu al-jazāʾa al-awfā
And afterward he will be repaid for it with fullest payment;
Waʾanna ilā rabbika al-muntahā
And that thy Lord, He is the goal;
Waʾannahu huwa aḍḥaka waʾabkā
And that He it is who maketh laugh, and maketh weep,
Waʾannahu huwa amāta waʾaḥyā
And that He it is Who giveth death and giveth life;
Waʾannahu khalaqa az-zawjayni adh-dhakara wal-unthā
And that He createth the two spouses, the male and the female,
Min nuṭfatin idhā tumnā
From a drop (of seed) when it is poured forth;
Waʾanna ʿalayhi an-nashʾata al-ukhrā
And that He hath ordained the second bringing forth;
Waʾannahu huwa aghnā waʾaqnā
And that He it is Who enricheth and contenteth;
Waʾannahu huwa rabbu ash-shiʿrā
And that He it is Who is the Lord of Sirius;
Waʾannahu ahlaka ʿādan al-ulā
And that He destroyed the former (tribe of) A'ad,
Wathamūda famā abqā
And (the tribe of) Thamud He spared not;
Waqawma nūḥin min qablu innahum kānū hum aẓlama waʾaṭghā
And the folk of Noah aforetime, Lo! they were more unjust and more rebellious;
Wal-muʾtafikata ahwā
And Al-Mu'tafikah He destroyed
Faghashshāhā mā ghashshā
So that there covered them that which did cover.
Fabiʾayyi ālāʾi rabbika tatamārā
Concerning which then, of the bounties of thy Lord, canst thou dispute?
Hādhā nadhīrun mina an-nudhuri al-ulā
This is a warner of the warners of old.
Azifati al-āzifah
The threatened Hour is nigh.
Laysa lahā min dūni Allāhi kāshifah
None beside Allah can disclose it.
Afamin hādhā al-ḥadīthi taʿjabūn
Marvel ye then at this statement,
Wataḍḥakūna walā tabkūn
And laugh and not weep,
Waʾantum sāmidūn
While ye amuse yourselves?
Fāsjudū lillāhi wāʿbudū
Rather prostrate yourselves before Allah and serve Him.
