Those who drag forth · Meccan · 46 verses
Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Wan-nāziʿāti gharqā
By those who drag forth to destruction,
Wan-nāshiṭāti nashṭā
By the meteors rushing,
Was-sābiḥāti sabḥā
By the lone stars floating,
Fas-sābiqāti sabqā
By the angels hastening,
Fal-mudabbirāti amrā
And those who govern the event,
Yawma tarjufu ar-rājifah
On the day when the first trump resoundeth.
Tatbaʿuhā ar-rādifah
And the second followeth it,
Qulūbun yawmaʾidhin wājifah
On that day hearts beat painfully
Abṣāruhā khāshiʿah
While eyes are downcast
Yaqūlūna aʾinnā lamardūdūna fī al-ḥāfirah
(Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state
Aʾidhā kunnā ʿiẓāman nakhirah
Even after we are crumbled bones?
Qālū tilka idhan karratun khāsirah
They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding.
Faʾinnamā hiya zajratun wāḥidah
Surely it will need but one shout,
Faʾidhā hum bis-sāhirah
And lo! they will be awakened.
Hal atāka ḥadīthu mūsā
Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses?
Idh nādāhu rabbuhu bil-wādi al-muqaddasi ṭuwā
How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa,
Idhhab ilā firʿawna innahu ṭaghā
(Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled -
Faqul hal laka ilā an tazakkā
And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)?
Waʾahdiyaka ilā rabbika fatakhshā
Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).
Faʾarāhu al-āyata al-kubrā
And he showed him the tremendous token.
Fakadhdhaba waʿaṣā
But he denied and disobeyed,
Thumma adbara yasʿā
Then turned he away in haste,
Faḥashara fanādā
Then gathered he and summoned
Faqāla anā rabbukumu al-aʿlā
And proclaimed: "I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest."
Faʾakhadhahu Allāhu nakāla al-ākhirati wal-ulā
So Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former.
Inna fī dhālika laʿibratan liman yakhshā
Lo! herein is indeed a lesson for him who feareth.
Aʾantum ashaddu khalqan ami as-samāʾu banāhā
Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built?
Rafaʿa samkahā fasawwāhā
He raised the height thereof and ordered it;
Waʾaghṭasha laylahā waʾakhraja ḍuḥāhā
And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof.
Wal-arḍa baʿda dhālika daḥāhā
And after that He spread the earth,
Akhraja minhā māʾahā wamarʿāhā
And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof,
Wal-jibāla arsāhā
And He made fast the hills,
Matāʿan lakum waliʾanʿāmikum
A provision for you and for your cattle.
Faʾidhā jāʾati aṭ-ṭāmmatu al-kubrā
But when the great disaster cometh,
Yawma yatadhakkaru al-insānu mā saʿā
The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour,
Waburrizati al-jaḥīmu liman yarā
And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth,
Faʾammā man ṭaghā
Then, as for him who rebelled
Waʾāthara al-ḥayāta ad-dunyā
And chose the life of the world,
Faʾinna al-jaḥīma hiya al-maʾwā
Lo! hell will be his home.
Waʾammā man khāfa maqāma rabbihi wanahā an-nafsa ʿani al-hawā
But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,
Faʾinna al-jannata hiya al-maʾwā
Lo! the Garden will be his home.
Yasʾalūnaka ʿani as-sāʿati ayyāna mursāhā
They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port?
Fīma anta min dhikrāhā
Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof?
Ilā rabbika muntahāhā
Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof.
Innamā anta mundhiru man yakhshāhā
Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it.
Kaʾannahum yawma yarawnahā lam yalbathū illā ʿashiyyatan aw ḍuḥāhā
On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof.
