Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
ʿabasa watawallā
He frowned and turned away
An jāʾahu al-aʿmā
Because the blind man came unto him.
Wamā yudrīka laʿallahu yazzakkā
What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)
Aw yadhdhakkaru fatanfaʿahu adh-dhikrā
Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him?
Ammā mani istaghnā
As for him who thinketh himself independent,
Faʾanta lahu taṣaddā
Unto him thou payest regard.
Wamā ʿalayka allā yazzakkā
Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).
Waʾammā man jāʾaka yasʿā
But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose
Wahuwa yakhshā
And hath fear,
Faʾanta ʿanhu talahhā
From him thou art distracted.
Kallā innahā tadhkirah
Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment,
Faman shāʾa dhakarah
So let whosoever will pay heed to it,
Fī ṣuḥufin mukarramah
On honoured leaves
Marfūʿatin muṭahharah
Exalted, purified,
Biʾaydī safarah
(Set down) by scribes
Kirāmin bararah
Noble and righteous.
Qutila al-insānu mā akfarah
Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful!
Min ayyi shayʾin khalaqah
From what thing doth He create him?
Min nuṭfatin khalaqahu faqaddarah
From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him,
Thumma as-sabīla yassarah
Then maketh the way easy for him,
Thumma amātahu faʾaqbarah
Then causeth him to die, and burieth him;
Thumma idhā shāʾa ansharah
Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life.
Kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarah
Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him.
Falyanẓuri al-insānu ilā ṭaʿāmih
Let man consider his food:
Annā ṣababnā al-māʾa ṣabbā
How We pour water in showers
Thumma shaqaqnā al-arḍa shaqqā
Then split the earth in clefts
Faʾanbatnā fīhā ḥabbā
And cause the grain to grow therein
Waʿinaban waqaḍbā
And grapes and green fodder
Wazaytūnan wanakhlā
And olive-trees and palm-trees
Waḥadāʾiqa ghulbā
And garden-closes of thick foliage
Wafākihatan waʾabbā
And fruits and grasses:
Matāʿan lakum waliʾanʿāmikum
Provision for you and your cattle.
Faʾidhā jāʾati aṣ-ṣākhkhah
But when the Shout cometh
Yawma yafirru al-marʾu min akhīh
On the day when a man fleeth from his brother
Waʾummihi waʾabīh
And his mother and his father
Waṣāḥibatihi wabanīh
And his wife and his children,
Likulli imriʾin minhum yawmaʾidhin shaʾnun yughnīh
Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).
Wujūhun yawmaʾidhin musfirah
On that day faces will be bright as dawn,
Ḍāḥikatun mustabshirah
Laughing, rejoicing at good news;
Wawujūhun yawmaʾidhin ʿalayhā ghabarah
And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,
Tarhaquhā qatarah
Veiled in darkness,
Ulāʾika humu al-kafaratu al-fajarah
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.
