The Overthrowing · Meccan · 29 verses
Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Idhā ash-shamsu kuwwirat
When the sun is overthrown,
Waʾidhā an-nujūmu inkadarat
And when the stars fall,
Waʾidhā al-jibālu suyyirat
And when the hills are moved,
Waʾidhā al-ʿishāru ʿuṭṭilat
And when the camels big with young are abandoned,
Waʾidhā al-wuḥūshu ḥushirat
And when the wild beasts are herded together,
Waʾidhā al-biḥāru sujjirat
And when the seas rise,
Waʾidhā an-nufūsu zuwwijat
And when souls are reunited,
Waʾidhā al-mawʾūdatu suʾilat
And when the girl-child that was buried alive is asked
Biʾayyi dhanbin qutilat
For what sin she was slain,
Waʾidhā aṣ-ṣuḥufu nushirat
And when the pages are laid open,
Waʾidhā as-samāʾu kushiṭat
And when the sky is torn away,
Waʾidhā al-jaḥīmu suʿʿirat
And when hell is lighted,
Waʾidhā al-jannatu uzlifat
And when the Garden is brought nigh,
ʿalimat nafsun mā aḥḍarat
(Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready.
Falā uqsimu bil-khunnas
Oh, but I call to witness the planets,
Al-jawāri al-kunnas
The stars which rise and set,
Wallayli idhā ʿasʿas
And the close of night,
Waṣ-ṣubḥi idhā tanaffas
And the breath of morning
Innahu laqawlu rasūlin karīm
That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger,
Dhī quwwatin ʿinda dhī al-ʿarshi makīn
Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne,
Muṭāʿin thamma amīn
(One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy;
Wamā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūn
And your comrade is not mad.
Walaqad raʾāhu bil-ufuqi al-mubīn
Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon.
Wamā huwa ʿalā al-ghaybi biḍanīn
And he is not avid of the Unseen.
Wamā huwa biqawli shayṭānin rajīm
Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned.
Faʾayna tadhhabūn
Whither then go ye?
In huwa illā dhikrun lilʿālamīn
This is naught else than a reminder unto creation,
Liman shāʾa minkum an yastaqīm
Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight.
Wamā tashāʾūna illā an yashāʾa Allāhu rabbu al-ʿālamīn
And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation.
