The Overwhelming · Meccan · 26 verses
Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Hal atāka ḥadīthu al-ghāshiyah
Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming?
Wujūhun yawmaʾidhin khāshiʿah
On that day (many) faces will be downcast,
ʿāmilatun nāṣibah
Toiling, weary,
Taṣlā nāran ḥāmiyah
Scorched by burning fire,
Tusqā min ʿaynin āniyah
Drinking from a boiling spring,
Laysa lahum ṭaʿāmun illā min ḍarīʿ
No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
Lā yusminu walā yughnī min jūʿ
Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
Wujūhun yawmaʾidhin nāʿimah
In that day other faces will be calm,
Lisaʿyihā rāḍiyah
Glad for their effort past,
Fī jannatin ʿāliyah
In a high Garden
Lā tasmaʿu fīhā lāghiyah
Where they hear no idle speech,
Fīhā ʿaynun jāriyah
Wherein is a gushing spring,
Fīhā sururun marfūʿah
Wherein are couches raised
Waʾakwābun mawḍūʿah
And goblets set at hand
Wanamāriqu maṣfūfah
And cushions ranged
Wazarābiyyu mabthūthah
And silken carpets spread.
Afalā yanẓurūna ilā al-ibili kayfa khuliqat
Will they not regard the camels, how they are created?
Waʾilā as-samāʾi kayfa rufiʿat
And the heaven, how it is raised?
Waʾilā al-jibāli kayfa nuṣibat
And the hills, how they are set up?
Waʾilā al-arḍi kayfa suṭiḥat
And the earth, how it is spread?
Fadhakkir innamā anta mudhakkir
Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,
Lasta ʿalayhim bimuṣayṭir
Thou art not at all a warder over them.
Illā man tawallā wakafar
But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,
Fayuʿadhdhibuhu Allāhu al-ʿadhāba al-akbar
Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
Inna ilaynā iyābahum
Lo! unto Us is their return
Thumma inna ʿalaynā ḥisābahum
And Ours their reckoning.
