The Dawn · Meccan · 30 verses
Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Wal-fajr
By the Dawn
Walayālin ʿashr
And ten nights,
Wash-shafʿi wal-watr
And the Even and the Odd,
Wallayli idhā yasr
And the night when it departeth,
Hal fī dhālika qasamun lidhī ḥijr
There surely is an oath for thinking man.
Alam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka biʿād
Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad,
Irama dhāti al-ʿimād
With many-columned Iram,
Allatī lam yukhlaq mithluhā fī al-bilād
The like of which was not created in the lands;
Wathamūda alladhīna jābū aṣ-ṣakhra bil-wād
And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;
Wafirʿawna dhī al-awtād
And with Pharaoh, firm of might,
Alladhīna ṭaghaw fī al-bilād
Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,
Faʾaktharū fīhā al-fasād
And multiplied iniquity therein?
Faṣabba ʿalayhim rabbuka sawṭa ʿadhāb
Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.
Inna rabbaka labil-mirṣād
Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful.
Faʾammā al-insānu idhā mā ibtalāhu rabbuhu faʾakramahu wanaʿʿamahu fayaqūlu rabbī akraman
As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.
Waʾammā idhā mā ibtalāhu faqadara ʿalayhi rizqahu fayaqūlu rabbī ahānan
But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.
Kallā bal lā tukrimūna al-yatīm
Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan
Walā taḥāḍḍūna ʿalā ṭaʿāmi al-miskīn
And urge not on the feeding of the poor.
Wataʾkulūna at-turātha aklan lammā
And ye devour heritages with devouring greed.
Watuḥibbūna al-māla ḥubban jammā
And love wealth with abounding love.
Kallā idhā dukkati al-arḍu dakkan dakkā
Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,
Wajāʾa rabbuka wal-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffā
And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,
Wajīʾa yawmaʾidhin bijahannama yawmaʾidhin yatadhakkaru al-insānu waʾannā lahu adh-dhikrā
And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?
Yaqūlu yā laytanī qaddamtu liḥayātī
He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!
Fayawmaʾidhin lā yuʿadhdhibu ʿadhābahu aḥad
None punisheth as He will punish on that day!
Walā yūthiqu wathāqahu aḥad
None bindeth as He then will bind.
Yā ayyatuhā an-nafsu al-muṭmaʾinnah
But ah! thou soul at peace!
Irjiʿī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyah
Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!
Fādkhulī fī ʿibādī
Enter thou among My bondmen!
Wādkhulī jannatī
Enter thou My Garden!
