Bismi Allāhi ar-raḥmāni ar-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
90:1
Lā uqsimu bihādhā al-balad
Nay, I swear by this city -
90:2
Waʾanta ḥillun bihādhā al-balad
And thou art an indweller of this city -
90:3
Wawālidin wamā walad
And the begetter and that which he begat,
90:4
Laqad khalaqnā al-insāna fī kabad
We verily have created man in an atmosphere:
90:5
Ayaḥsabu an lan yaqdira ʿalayhi aḥad
Thinketh he that none hath power over him?
90:6
Yaqūlu ahlaktu mālan lubadā
And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:
90:7
Ayaḥsabu an lam yarahu aḥad
Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
90:8
Alam najʿal lahu ʿaynayn
Did We not assign unto him two eyes
90:9
Walisānan washafatayn
And a tongue and two lips,
90:10
Wahadaynāhu an-najdayn
And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?
90:11
Falā iqtaḥama al-ʿaqabah
But he hath not attempted the Ascent -
90:12
Wamā adrāka mā al-ʿaqabah
Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -
90:13
Fakku raqabah
(It is) to free a slave,
90:14
Aw iṭʿāmun fī yawmin dhī masghabah
And to feed in the day of hunger.
90:15
Yatīman dhā maqrabah
An orphan near of kin,
90:16
Aw miskīnan dhā matrabah
Or some poor wretch in misery,
90:17
Thumma kāna mina alladhīna āmanū watawāṣaw biṣ-ṣabri watawāṣaw bil-marḥamah
And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.
90:18
Ulāʾika aṣḥābu al-maymanah
Their place will be on the right hand.
90:19
Walladhīna kafarū biʾāyātinā hum aṣḥābu al-mashʾamah
But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.
90:20
ʿalayhim nārun muʾṣadah
Fire will be an awning over them.
